Very much okay. Your dog will sleep most of the time you are gone. If you have a dog that gets into things when unsupervised it is a responsible thing to do, it will keep the dog from harming him/herself.

You be the judge.
Here are some do's and don'ts
Do think of the crate as a good thing. In time, your dog will too.
Do let the dog out often enough so that it is never forced to soil the crate.
Do let the dog out if it whines because it needs to eliminate. If you know it doesn't have to eliminate, correct it for whining or barking.
Do clean out the crate regularly, especially if you've put in a floor and you have flea problems.
Don't punish the dog if it soils the crate. It is miserable enough and probably had to.
Don't use the crate as a punishment.
Don't leave the dog in the crate for a long time after letting it eat and drink a lot. (because the dog will be uncomfortable and may have to eliminate in the crate.)
Don't leave the dog in the crate too much. Dogs sleep and rest a lot, but not all the time. They need play time and exercise. When you are at home, they should not be in the crate (except at night when they are still very young puppies). If necessary, put a leash on your pup and tie it around your waist while you're at home.
Don't check to see if your dog is trustworthy in the house (unsupervised, outside of the crate) by letting the dog out of the crate for a long time. Start with very short periods and work your way up to longer periods.
Don't ever let the dog grow unaccustomed to the crate. An occasional stint even for the best behaved dog will make traveling and special situations that require crating easier.
Don't put pillows or blankets in the crate without a good reason. Most dogs like it cooler than their human companions and prefer to stretch out on a hard, cool surface. Besides providing a place to urinate on, some dogs will simply destroy them. A rubber mat or a piece of peg-board cut to the right size might be a good compromise (be sure to clean under any floor covering frequently).

How long are you at work? Anything more than 8 hours is very long for a dog to be locked up. If the dog is young/untrained and this is temporary that is fine. Hopefully with time you can train your dog to be trusted outside of the crate.
Be sure that before and after crate use you walk, exercise and interact with your dog as much as possible. Too many people exploit the use of a crate. Not that I'm saying you will, but a crate is a training aid- not a permanent solution.

Yes, crating a dog when you're away is fine. But remember, puppies need to go out to potty often, so you can't leave a 3 month old pup in a crate for 8 hours. If this is the case, see if you can make arrangements for someone to come by and let puppy out a couple of times, until puppy is older and can hold it for a full work day stretch.

That's fine as long as you aren't gone for too long each day and the crate is large enough for your dog. Remember that your dog should have enough room to stand up and turn around in when the door is shut on the crate. When you are home, make sure to exercise your dog more to make up for the crated time. If this is the dog's first time being crated, get them used to the crate and make sure food and water are accessible. I know when I first tried to crate my pup, he layed down and whined all night before finally going to sleep. Try and make the crate synonomous with good feelings and positive things, like treats. Crating your pooch should be just fine!

If you have a tiny dog and put them in a huge crate, maybe yes. But otherwise NO. Would you like to be locked up in your shower for 9 hours while your dog goes to work???
Instead set up a large area, like the kitchen or bathroom where the dog has room to move, a designated place to potty (try using a large baking pan with cat litter, and food and drink.
Shame on you for thinking the poor thing could last a LONG day caged!!!

A crate is meant for transporting dogs. It should not be used as a "home" for them. If you work 1 hour a day, that's fine. Anything more is kinda cruel to your dog. If you must, leave him in a large cage, where he has enough room to stretch around and possibly walk too (actually, leaving him/her in a room is much better). Make sure you give plenty of clean water and leave toys so that they don't get bored.

first of all personally i would not have a dog if i was out at work ,it is ok to shut them in for a couple of hours but i wouldn't like to leave mine locked up for any longer than that, all depending on how big he is what about a baby's wooden play pen with the inside lined with perspex he will be able to see out and it will stop him from chewing the bars, that way he will have one half to sleep in and you can put food and water the other side and put paper in the corner in case he needs the toilet before you come home, also leave him with safe toys to play with.
