Beta thalassaemia minor means that he has a thalassaemia trait, but is not affected. His hemoglobin is normal. He does not need a blood transfusion. If he marries someone who is a carrier, i.e. having the same trait, their children have a 25% chance of having beta thalassaemia major, needing blood transfusions. About hepatitis B, if it is a carrier state only and his liver function tests remain normal, he can work. However, it is better that he gets himself treated with lamividine and pegylated interferon. He should get regular check- ups with liver function tests and ultrasound of the liver. He can develop cirrhosis or liver cancer later on.
