I understand why hitting a finger with a hammer hurts and what provokes that pain, but how come that during a migraine light or sound can have the same effect?

Pain is a perception of the brain. Light and sound both reach the brain through the same basic nervous system that carries the message from your smashed finger.

How those electrical impulses cause the sensation of pain is still a matter of theory.

I believe it is called sensory overload. I experienced a blinding light when a firecracker exploded next to my ear. Oh, the pain part was felt by the a***hole that tossed it on me -- right after it happened.
