The absolute GODDESS of Greek music has to be Alkistis Protopsalti.
Check out her webpage www.alkistisprotopsalti.gr
or the unofficial site is http://users.forthnet.gr/klm/iredot/protopsalti.htm

I agree that Alkistis is at the top, but you know who I put even higher is Eleni Vitali. It's hard to find her stuff because she was big in the Eighties and went into a mental institution. She's gotten out and made a comeback in the last few years, and that stuff is still wonderful for me because I love her that much. I recommend most her albums with the songwriter Takis Soukas, and a collaboration she did with Manolis Galiatsos called 'Light of August'. I found the Takis Soukas ones on a Greek CD website that took a little while to find and, sorry, and can't remember, but the Manolis Galiatsos was a tape sitting on the shelf in an old Greek store in San Francisco. She started out doing Dimotika, and very well (her debut album has a surprisingly weak voice for how she came out only one album later, with her Dimotika one), then through the eighties she tried to find new kinds of music that weren't just sellouts to other cultures, but genuinely Greek (Like Alkistis has done very successfully (I recommend her album 'Anthropon Erga')), so she makes a good artistic tale to kind of follow through all of her experiments, including a kind of synthesizer-based liturgical music in an album I think that translates to 'Prayers'.

Katerina Kouka is the *best* for knocking out good old Laika music--her producers know how to mic and eq it so that it almost has the punch of a rock band with totally traditional instruments.
