What wood should I use for hardness and durability for the main floor of a house?
I love the look of Brazilian Cherry but have been informed that it changes colour in the light. Has anyone any information or experience about using Brazilian cherry hardwood?

PREFINISHED HARDWOOD HAVE A BETTER AND MUCH MORE DURABLE FINISH THAN STANDARD UNFINISHED FLOORS. GET A SAMPLE FIRST AND TAKE HOME AND SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.IN THE LIGHT. WITH SUCH A DARK FLOOR IT WILL SHOW DUST AND WILL BE HARDER TO KEEP CLEAN ESPECIALLY IN A KITCHEN--BUT IT WILL BEAUTIFUL. MOST PREMIUM FLOORS WILL BE WARRANTIED FOR 25 YEARS.

Larry B is right on the Brazilian cherry but that's all.Processed or man made flooring doesn't last as long as real wood. There are several places to buy real wood flooring. It will hold up longer and look better. The other stuff is glued down and most of the glues loose there hold in a few years. Then you have to do the whole thing again.

Your information is correct. Brazilian cherry will come out of the box with a brownish colour. I will quickly turn to a deep red once it oxidizes. If you bring samples home, they will already have oxidized. Just dont be suprised if the new floor goes in brown.

It will be harder to maintain a darker floor, so I would suggest a natural oak or maple engineered floor that you gluedown. Its very hard and resists denting, and has a very timeless look. It doesnt show dirt or hairballs very easily, and is easy to touch up if you damage it.
