The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. When your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. After exercise (play), take the pup out. When the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. Tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. If you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "I should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. You will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck

I used a variation of the crate training method with my baby chihuahua. He is such a love!
My Dog's Place On The Web:

I found an affordable (human) playpen at a yard sale. That left me enough room to locate my lil doggy's food / water / toys / bed all together inside his new environment. Since he is so small, I was also able to put a litter box in there too in case he couldn't wait. It ended up that he really liked the litter box so not only did he learn to pee and poop outside but he also learned what a litter box is too. I had to work on finding the best litter for his lil paws though, at first he didn't like going in there because the stuff I originally bought smelled funny or was uncomfortable to walk on.
Here is a website that offers the basics of crate training your pup. It features some really cute pictures too. Remember: Always do the same thing everyday and your pup will learn faster.

My doggie sleeps in bed with me now and first thing I do in the morning is carry him to the door and set him loose to do his thing and it works out OK.
Good Luck!

Most agree that larger breeds are easier to "housebreak" than the smaller breeds. The key to any training, including teaching the pup to "go" outside, is CONSISTENCY! Crate training has worked for many, including my dog- as most dogs do not want to soil their own area where they sleep. During daytime hours, I took him outside every 1-2 hours, and immediately after he eats and plays. After the pup "does his business", reward him enthusiastically with affection and treats. He will make mistakes- hes just a pup and learning. Any failure is not that of the dog, but that of the owner, for not taking him out often enough. As the pup gets older you will be able to increase the time between taking him out. He wont be considered truly reliable till about 1 yr old. Be patient! It will take some work, but will be worth it!

The quickest and most effective way to housebreak a puppy is constant vigilance. Keep an eye on him/her at all times. As soon as you see it sqatting pick it up and take it outside to the spot you wish it to use. If it goes to wander off pick it up and put it back in the right spot and give it's bladder a very gentle sqeeze. Once it has gone praise it and take it back inside. Our dogs have always gone in the one spot and we had a 5 acre property so it is possible and makes cleaning up so much easier. If you keep an eye on the puppy and take it outside each time before it goes inside it will learn very quickly. If you miss it even just once it will take much longer because animal remember bad habits very quickly.

Crate Training. They don't like to sleep where they mess. They learn to hold it longer and gradually over about 2 weeks they learn.A very young puppy can't hold their urine. So they need to be watched closely and when they start to sniff take them out. Lots and Lots of praise when they go potty outside. When you take them out tell them "potty hurry". They will do their business right away and on those rainy nights when your outside with them they will be trained to go right away and not sniff around first.. Good Luck!
P.S. There's a book called something like Housebreak your pup in 7 days. Read it long ago. If you follow it, it works.

The best way is to first make sure you are spending enough time with your pet, they are just like children. You need to do your part on watching the dog and making sure you are letting it out often. When you bring your dog outside tell it "outside and go potty". Go outside with the dog and watch. After the dog has done its thing make sure to tell it "good dog outside and potty" so that it knows that its a good thing and it will be praised. Dogs are extremely smart, don't under estimate them. If the dog does go potty in the house scold it in a very sturn voice letting them know to go outside and potty. You want the dog to feel that you are disappointed in it not angry. Then put the dog outside as you continually tell them "go potty outside, bad dog" when you bring the dog inside put it in a bed or a kennel for about 5-10 mins remiding it to go outside. Make sure when you take the dog out to let it know that you still love it, but you will not have a nasty dog. Again they are like children, you have to let them know that you have the controll not them. But respect them and love them 100%. If you have to leave and don't trust your dog yet use a doggy gate and put him in a room with hard floors, like a bathroom. If you do this I promise you that you will have a great pet!

The Best way is to:
1) After every nap and 10-30 minutes after every meal Take them outside. Wait for them to go, then praise them and Say Go poty. Also say that when they are out side. They will learn soon enough.
2) when they DO go to the bathroom in the house immeiditly take them outside. Then dont clean where they went and then take them back inside and punish them. Spank them and Rub their nose in it.

Crating. As soon as they wake up carry them outside.Don't bring them back in until they go.Use the same word all the time.Praise them as they are going.Take them out right after they eat.I wrote it down every time she went-accident or taken out. This told me how often she had to go,and in no time she was telling me.
