If the grit number is preceded by the letter "P", such as P2000, this indicates FEPA grit. Most sandpaper today is manufactured according to the international FEPA standard.
FEPA = Federation of European Producers of Abrasive Products
The FEPA system is the same as the ISO 6344 standard.

I think it refers to the grade of the glass paper, p is usually followed by a number.

like p36 p80 p400..
its the particulate count. P35 for 35 grits per sq inch, P400 yes, 400 grits per inch.. so its smaller and finer...
