If you had income from both states, you will have to file as part year residents (based on days in each state) for each state. All of your NY income will be reported to California, then through a formula process based on ratio of NY earnings to California there will be a prorated percentage used on California. If you moved to CA with only NY income your CA return could generate a Schedule S for income tax paid to another state. It is certainly advisable to use a registered tax preparer with filings of in this situation.

You would file a tax return with BOTH states - as a part-year resident.
