My friend Fern insists that she is not fat but simply not tall enough for the weight she is.

Technically ... that's not denial... it's rationalisation... but they can be the same thing in some senses.

I just hope you're not basing height and weight too rigidly on the standard charts... I've been "overweight" since I was 13 ... and I've never been less than "very fit" .. but I'm well built and muscled.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt sweetie. It sounds like Fern (if that really is her name) is just being funny. I used to joke and say that I wasn't overweight, just short for my weight. I should be 7'6".

hahahaha

Yes. That is denial. Tell her that unless she grows half a foot overnight, then she's fat right now. And if she does, she'll be really skinny when she gains those extra 6 inches.

She's right, but still overweight. She has to deal with the fact that she cannot compare herself to another person, but just be the right weight for her height. (Not that I can talk, being short and fat!)

It's either denial, or it's her sense of humor coming through. Or some combination of the two ;)

yes that is denial, and if she doesnt soon come to terms with her weight she could be going down a very dangerous road. obesity is one of the deadliest diseases in america. heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol...the list goes on...
