G'day,
It all depending on a lot of factors. Based on my experience as an immigrant in Oz, they are as follows:
1. Who do you live with. If you live with the same ppl from the same background, will take longer compared if you live with Ozzies.
2. What kind of job you are doing
3. How old were you when you come to Oz
4. What's your background. Most British, American, Malaysian, Japanese (and some other strong accent countries) will be hard to lose the original accent. Some less strong accent language (eg. Indonesian) will adapt pretty quickly.
Hope this answer your question. Good luck!

I don't think you would unless your are very young. At the same time I was raised in Minnesota and moved to the South when I was in my teens. I have a southern accent to most. I am not southern like a lot of people around me, but you can tell I live in the South. I think it takes years for your accent to change. It may never happen.

I moved to Australia from NZ and after 1 1/2 years had started to have a little Aussie twang to some words. I have now lived in the States for going on 8 years and still have a very NZ accent but find myself rolling my 'r's, sometimes on purpose just so I can be understood! My family in NZ thinks I sound very American, and Americans think I sound very foreign.
I knew Americans in Oz and NZ who had been there years and I couldn't hear a trace of Aussie accent in their voices! I think it's very very rare for an American to lose their accent when overseas.

If you moved to Australia from the US i don't think that you would ever properly loose your american accent. I have lived in Australia all of my life and i can easily tell if you are american or nit because of your accent, even if you have been here for 8 - 10 years

If you work hard at it, you could pick up the accent in a few hours, but under natural conditions, you would start picking up the accent in a few months.

It depends on how strong minded the person is. A weak mind will pick up the accent much faster than the strong mind.
