What is the proper meaning of the word "Islam?" My world history book said it meant "submission," but a Sunni I know said it meant "peace." Which is correct? Also, why is Islam so against tatoos and the like? Is tatooing viewed as being along the same lines as harming oneself physically?

Peace be with you,

Islam means Submission and the religion itself is peaceful and just.

Regarding tatoos:

As for your question, you have to keep in mind the fact that body piercing, tattooing, branding, etc. all fall in the category of unnecessary interference, alteration and mutilation of Allah’s creation. Therefore, no Muslim, who is conscious of his religion, should ever contemplate such activities.

“Islam denounces excesses in beautifying oneself when it alters the physical features that Allah created him with. The Glorious Qur'an considers such alterations as inspired by Satan, who "...will command them (his devotees) to change what Allah has created...” (An-Nisa': 119)

I wish I knew how to make this keyboard do Arabic, as that's what I need here. Anyhow, the "s" in "islam" is not the same as the "s" in "salaam" (health, peace). Islam really does mean "submission", but that would be submission to the will of God, which is something I suppose Christians and Jews believe in as well.

On the other question, Arab culture prohibits the depiction of living creatures, which is why so much of Arab artistic talent goes into calligraphy. I can't think that your friend would object to your having a verse from the Quran tatooed on your arm, at least by a female tatooist.

Arabic words are usually made up of 3 root consonants letters.

In this case, it's "SLM" words that have these three letters are:

SaLaM - Peace
al- ISLaM - The religion of the submission to the will of God
SaLLiM - Surrender
muSLiM - A person who surrenders/submits to the will of God
...etc

As you can see, all terms: "Peace", "Surrender" and "Submission" come from the three Arabic root letters "S-L-M". Forming the words by adding vowels changes the context the word may be used in, and possibly the meaning.

Who told you Islam was against tattoos? Ladies decorate their skin with Henna all the time, all over the Arab and Muslim world. There is nothing wrong with that, it's decoration. Maybe you are referring to drawing human images on the skin, which in general, Islam does not promote...

Islam means peace. Like in the greeting "As Salaamu Alaikum" which means peace be unto you. It is the equivalent to Shalom the Hebrew word for peace. Arabic & Hebrew are the same language but different dialects, so the basic letters of the words are the same. In this case it is S,L & M.

The word Muslim came about from 2 words; Mu (one) and Salam (peace). When said quickly you'll get Muslim which means one of peace or a peacemaker. Don't let anybody fool u into believing Islam is submission because the 5th attribute of Allah is Al Salaamu the Peaceful not the Submitter because Allah cannot submit to anybody or anything.

Islaam comes from the word root: 'Istislaam' meaning 'surrender/submission' so your history book was right.

Hurting oneself for any reason is against Islam. Hurting yourself for beautification purposes, goes in the same category.

Also, you cant change what God gave you unless its for health reasons. so tattoos are a big no no .
