Mystics are those who are drawn more to spirituality and the spiritual path. There are many kinds of mystics, but all seek union with God. There are those who practice severe austerities in order to starve the body and mind of desire, those who take to the scriptures voraciously, and those who devote mind and soul to nothing but the adoration and service of the Divine.

Mystics are enlightened. They may have followed a particular faith but their knowledge far outweighs the common man. They seek to be exactly who they are - a human.

I don't suppose you would call this an answer , maybe just an observation .
When I was in India , before partition we used to see these holy men just wandering around .
They owned nothing they didn't pray or ask anyone else to pray, they had nothing but the breech clout that covered them and sometimes not even that .
To my mind they are the only truly spiritual men , all the rest ask for something or want you to follow their way or to worship THEIR god .

Something in the human animal wants to believe in a magic that will give them some kind of control over their existence.
A wonderful site that explains the superstition of Christians is "Why won't God heal Amputees?" (http://whywontgodhealamputees.com/)...
...it doesn't cover other mystic sects in much detail, but the information on the Christian sect is still excellent.

I think they seek to teach us how to find the Lord, which is our own true home.
It's subsequent generations that establish laws and rituals which eventually turn into "religions".
But it's the way it's always been, so we shouldn't criticize others too much.

I think people are desparate to find connection to all things and to escape death. I think people search religion to escape mortality and to become connected to something. Everything seeks survival and religion tricks people into thinking that their brand of religion will lead to eternal survival. Religion preys on humanities deepest fears...the fear of not surviving.
