Thanks everyone for your answers! My cat has already been vaccinated for feline leukemia, my parents did this when they had him neutered, but they said that they did not have him tested. What would happen to a cat if they had leukemia already and ended up taking a shot for it?

Thanks for all the answers :) I am wondering one more thing: Let's say my cat is a carrier of leukemia and hasn't shown signs of it yet, would a test show that he has leukemia? or would I have to wait to have him tested in order to find out?

Yes, it usually costs, the vet has to buy the tests (and they aren't cheap), but if you could find a low cost spay and neuter place that offers tests, it would probably be a lot cheaper. As for the allergies, this is probably going to be more expensive, because you usually have to take them to a specialist for extensive testing to find out what they are allergic to.

Yes, it will cost money but it's necessary especially for the feline leukemia. It's a very nasty disease, similar to AIDS, and the cat will suffer and probably die from it. It's also very contagious to other cats, so I would have the cat tested and vaccinated ASAP. If you think your cat has allergies, there are meds for that also, it can be a seasonal thing or it can be chronic, just like with humans.
Good luck!

A cat should be tested prior to the vaccination or it could bring on the virus faster if they indeed have it. Most vets require the test first or they may have done bllod work prior to surgery that would tell them if your cat was positive. If Kittens are born with the virus they will not live to their 2nd Birthday before the virus kills them. It costs to do allergiy testing, ask your vet for these prices as they vary greatly. IF a cat has Felv or FIV I suggest putting them to sleep if they are showing signs. It is a horrible thing to watch a cat suffer from this disease and trying to prolong their life with steriods or any other antibiotic is no way to live. PLus by keeping the infected cat alive you are poss infecting other cats that come in contact with them, I know this sounds harsh but sometimes reality is harsh.

Yes, it costs, but if you find a good vet, it's worth every penny. Sometimes, if you're buying a new cat or kitten from a shelter, the cost of the first tests is covered by the shelter... usually not, but you might ask. Some shelters will perform the tests themselves if they have vets on hand, but generally this is going to fall on you the owner.

All tests cost. If money is an issue, is there a non-profit or low cost center in your area? I'm lucky to have a non profit animal clinic where I take my cats for shots and testing. Check out to see what's in your area. Or maybe your vet will work out a payment plan for you.

Around here it varies between shelters that offer it and vets. Shelters charge $15-$40 while vets seem to charge $30-$75 for a combo FIV and FeLV test.

The Leuk / FIV test in the mid-west us is about $20. Allergy tests can go into the hundreds or more depending on how long it takes you to figure out what your cat is allergic to.

yes, it is very costly. look elanessea whether you bring your cat to the vet, vet will not do anything about feline leukemia of your cat, i have lots of cats who have feline leukemia, just we gave them extra care and some raw chicken liver, sooner or later they will become weaker and weaker till they die, so in my own opinion vets are useless, there is a medicines name '' zithromax '' we gave to them ,, to keep them alive a bit longer...

My cat has feline lukemia and was tested at the vet for 20.00. He has been healthy and hopefully remains that way, just have to keep him that way. we take him for regular check-ups and give him lots of love but just because they test positive don't mean they will get sick, its like aids just because you have it don't mean you will get sick from it..Good luck and please have the cat tested..
