Do I have to file a FAFSA even if I may try to get a loan elsewhere, like a credit union? My parents income is @ 100,000- do I even try?

Yes, it is worth a try. There are many worksheets involved with the FAFSA form. Plus, it can open access to the campus work study program which can bring in cash during the school year along with some work experience. However, there is still a chance of getting some non need based scholarships from other sources which can be located for free.

First, the high school guidance office can provide a list of local scholarships to apply for consideration to current high school students.

Second, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies.

Third, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

Yes, you should always try, though your better bet is obviously the credit union. There are a lot of things to take into account. You also might need to consider getting out on your own first to receive more help if your parents aren't able to foot the bill. Good luck. Your school counselors are always great resources for this.
