Most here are right. They gas them if possible and then burn them to destroy the virus just like you see in movies on TV. It is much better than what they do to healthy chickens and turkeys you eat. These are hung upside down on a conveyer and they pass by a knife that slits their throats. Both methods are humane, so this is not an issue that will have you running to join that extremist cult group PETA. If you believe in animals volunteer and join at your local SPCA - never with extremist cults.

In a word, Euthanasia. They quarantine the entire flock, rope off the area, and gas them. In other situations, they will poison the feed. I have even heard of situations where they herd them into a barn or shed, and burn the whole thing down (a la Auschwitz).
In any event, glad they do it. We sure don't need HN51 bird flu hanging around.

bird flu kills :
Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated secretions or excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry, or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.
ppl kill infected poultry by: as decribed by other participants here - gassing.
superstar - try and be a little more informed - READ if you want to know how contamination spreads - what are you doing to do - shoot every bird that flies over the area in case it poops? best solution for foot and mouth disease in your case.

They gassed them this morning and have since shipped them out to incinerate them.
Evil and vile & Bernard Matthews should be ashamed of himself that he keeps his animals in such awful conditions. How the hell has bird flu got into his farms?
I hope he gets prosecuted & sent to jail the fat git. Boycott all Bernard Matthews cruelly kept foodstuffs if you know what is good for you.
