No not cured however, I believe that depression and stress disorders can be somewhat alleviated through a person taking direct action to change their environment.
I made a major life change when I realized that my environment was causing far too much grief for me to continue living in the same place doing the same things with the same people day in and day out.
I am originally from a big city. I attended college in a small town. People thought I would be delighted to go back home after school. When I returned home after years of being away with only the occassional visit to eat holiday dinners with family, I felt like a lost puppy in the middle of the woods. There was simply too much going on in that city that did not agree with me. I thought I would get used to living there after a while. I didn't. After ten years of living in the big northern city, I moved to a small town in the rural South. I am a new person and haven't had an anxiety attack since the relocation. The depression that I normally suffer during the winter months, seasonal affective disorder, is also absent.
Now, instead of lying in bed half of the time, I am a vibrant person again. Gee, I missed me!
I'm glad to be back on track. I thank God daily for the return to normalcy.
Also, getting away from and staying away from "toxic" people can be very helpful in resolving mental health issues.
However, a person that is experiencing 'wellness' for a while should still remain committed (pardon the pun) to taking medications and seeing their doctors and other helping professionals.

Look at it from a different angle could you cure yourself from a kidney disease? probably not huh? mental illness is given such a stigma It is a Brain disease the Brain is the most important organ in the body it has a disease shouldnt it be given the same respect as a damn kidney? I dont mean to take it out on you I just have lived with the stigma of "mental defect" for so many years that I have conditioned myself to defense mode

I've read about people who claim to have cured themselves of certain mental illnesses (e.g., depression) through "natural" treatments. So I would say that in some cases it is possible to cure yourself of a mental illness.

I don't think you can "cure" yourself. Some people might get better without any help, if their brain chemistry corrects itself. However, this would be a dangerous practice as its well know that depression is a serious illness that untreated can lead to death (suicide).

ABSOLUTELY NOT! it is hard enough for people to diagnose themselves of mental illness let alone TREAT their problems. Although one can help themselves by doing and thinking the right things, one can definitely not eliminate any mental problems.

No but you can control many of the symptoms. It also depends on the illness. Schizophrenia probably not, depression/anxiety probably yes. I know some who have controlled symptoms of depression/anxiety without meds for years.

Most people need counseling and possibly medication to help them with mental illness.
