Tests don't diagnose anything.

In it's own, ESR shows inflammation only. It can indicate, along with other tests, various problems, but it's up to your doctor to combine those test results woth your history and exam to find a diagnosis.

The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is an archaic, absolutely worhtless test that laboratory professionals have been trying to get rid of for years, but there are still too many older doctors that actually believe the results mean something. The only thing an elevated ESR means is that there is inflammation somewhere in the body. It gives no indication of where the inflammation is or what might be causing it. There are many more tests available today that are specific as to what may be causing inflammatory problems and how to treat them.

ESR is non- specific. It is related to the fibrinogen concentration of the blood. ESR is raised in several conditions. It is raised with most bacterial infections, cancers, autoimmune disorders, etc.

vih? Do you mean HIV?
ESR measures an inflammatory response in your body. It won't tell you if you have HIV.
