If formal is a ten, and working in the garden sloth is a one, then lounge suits dress comes in at about a seven or eight.

Something between skirt and blouse/jumper and cocktail dress etc. Remember, although it is only a lounge suit affair you are being invited to dinner. Therefore, the lady should make a little effort beyond smart casual. It is better for her to be slightly over dressed than slightly under dressed.

A two-piece or something with slacks seems to be acceptible. The long 'posh frock' with the best bits and pieces may be considered over-dressy (that would be black-tie rig).

No need for lots of bling and definately not trainers.

What about a nice plain dress with accessories? The Audrey Hepburn style dress.

Something smart but not as formal as a cocktail dress.

Smart / casual. What do you wear for work? That's the level you are looking for.
