Anyone who gets a W2 form in the mail must file their taxes. If you make less than $5,000 in a year, you have the choice of putting "exempt" on your filing status (both when you file your taxes and also when you are first employed and signing your tax forms). Exempt will allow you to receive your whole paycheck with zero taken out for taxes. But everyone files taxes...your daughter just won't have to pay them...and if she has been having the employer take out money for taxes, she will receive a refund. Hope that helps!

I'm in the same exact situation. College student on full ride who takes up a summer job (only I make under $3,000) and I have always had to file... I never knew there was a possible option not to!

She doesn't have to file a tax return. However she may want to file to get any withholding back.

She would file a Form 1040EZ claiming zero exemptions.
