I should hope that they let your mum stay. Raise a row if they don't.

I had a spinal for surgery, and it was pretty painless. Like plucking a hair. Depends a lot on the person doing it. It helps if you can relax. The only trouble I had was that during the surgery I made a joke that the surgeon didn't care for and the next thing I knew I was waking up three hours later. He had them put me out, spiked my I V as it were.

Try not to tell jokes when they are working on you, at least not doctor jokes.

I had a lumbar puncture done for some testing back when I was in high shool, and it went off without a hitch.

The local anesthetic will knock off most of the pain, and all you will feel is a bit of pushing, tugging and grinding in your back. Beyond the initial prick of the l. a. needle there won't be muc physical pain.

I am sure that if you ask your doctor if your mom can stay he will surely let her.

A lumbar puncture is a minor surgical procedure and it is usually performed outside the operating room, so it is possible that your mom can stay with you during the procedure. Just talk to your doctor and tell him it would make you feel better to have your mom beside you...
Letting the doctor and nurse know how you feel about the whole thing will make them understand you better enough to grant your request.
Relax..., it will only feel a little more than a pinprick and takes only a few minutes to finish...

If you are this scared, they might let your mom stay. However, the staff worries that your mom will freak out during the puncture and now they have two patients instead of one. Ask them to give you something to calm you down and once it kicks in you may not care about what's going on behind you. The first small shot is to numb the skin, and it does sting a bit. After that, there isn't much pain, just pressure and odd noises.

They normally only use a local anesthetic for this and yes your mother can be right with you when they do it.
