Unless the other person tells you, the only way to find out is to file a tax return. The IRS will notify you if there are any problems.

Privacy rules and laws prevent the IRS from telling you anything about another taxpayers return. If someone else claimed you as a dependent and you didn't check the box that says you can be claimed as a dependent on your return, the IRS will contact both taxpayers to settle the issue. They will not reveal who the other taxpayer is but will ask for proof of the claim.

Neither the tax preparer nor the IRS will give out this information. You could ask the person if you suspect you have been claimed as a dependent.

If you are not a dependent, file your return claiming yourself. If the return rejects, submit a paper return with a cover letter documenting that you are not a dependent.

My guess is that you have an estranged guardian and you have just been informed that either your application for financial aid has been rejected or denied or in the middle of a semester it was pulled because you "lied" on your application.

The previous posters are correct. Whoever used your SSN to obtain an undeserved tax credit screwed you and you can't trace them. You are basically screwed out of financial aid for school.

This becoming a huge problem for kids with guardians who are less than honest, especially the kids who need financial aid the most.

Don't hold your breath. The financial aid system looks good on paper, but, a lot of people 10% plus, get totally screwed by the system. I worked my way through school while raising a family as a single father and it took 15 years. I did get some aid that was useful during the Clinton admin (NAFTA displaced worker status), but, normal financial aid channels were no help at all.

You can try doing as people have suggested, but, this is going to take years and you won't get your financial aid, even after you get it straight they will keep trying to collect and toast your credit rating.

I know it is tough, I have been through it. You can do it too.

My prayers are with you.
