Music is the universal language of the soul/emotions, just as Mathematics are the universal language of the mind/reason. Music has been used in ritual and worship for thousands of years. Music and it's vibrations and energy waves affect us deeply. Listen to sad songs...you feel sad. Listen to happy songs you are uplifted. Of course music affects up much more than just changing our moods. A study of Chakras and the note's associated with them would be helpful to you. Music is a powerful force in healing as well.

Does music have to have 'spiritual' connotations?
Could it just be a predisposition that something that can evoke such strong emotions within our psyches must be interrupted as coming from supernaturalism? We feel a need to search for an external answer because they effect such power over our moods?
If you see dolphins on the TV that can evoke strong emotions, the sun setting with a plethora of colours against the horizon also evokes an emotional response in much the same way music can, but we don't often say that dolphins or the sun are in anyway supernatural.
Harmonics have a real impact on our minds, but I don't believe they have any connection to the supernatural. Everything in our universe down to the atomic levels have motion of some kind, vibration, Brownian motion... I believe it's all a naturally occurring phenomena.

Music has always been the expression of soul that we can hear, as Art has been the expression of the soul that we can see. Music can do many things for us - it affects our emotions, it can regulate our heart beats, it can enhance our creativity.
Music can be anything you wish it to be - it can be your means of finding the Divine within you or outside of you.
It would then be debatable as to the current music trends has upon this idea - but these musical form still cause change and invoke response - which is what music is about.

Music is the most spiritual thing in the world to me. It's... an energy. I can't describe it, but I put more stock in music than in any holy book.

Music is a manifestation of sounds that trigger our emotions and through its frequency it cause s us to react differently. We connect to it because it is based on the basic reality that exist in everything alive-rhythm. Thus the rhythm and frequency helps us in expressing certain feeling that we can't find the words to describe.
