My husband is holding the cat by its thighs and dangling it for a few seconds, he says he is playing, my previous post says he is holding it by his legs but my husband says i put the question wrong and it is not his legs but his thighs, he says dont treat him like a child as he knows all about cats, hes had them all his life and he is in his mid 50s so he had had lots of experience with owning cats and he reassures me this is doing the cat no harm.

Hi there again Davina...it is not a good idea to hold a cat by it's hind legs (thighs included) as it can cause accidental hyper-extention dislocating the joints. Your gut instincts are correct with this and as you can see the consensus by the answers everyone is offering you're are correct to make this assumption of concern.

Again, a simple call to a veterinary hospital can establish proof that this isn't advisable as well.

Your husband says don't treat him like a child, well for that to happen he needs to stop acting like one. I too have had cats all my life ( i am 34 BTW and currently am a proud mama of 4 kitties) and I have much more constructive ways to play with my cats. And hey I have an idea.....what about I take him by his legs thighs WHATEVER and dangle him........how would he like that? I would NEVER tolerate that behaviour from my husband. I am sorry but your hubby sounds like a jerk.

Sorry, your husband is abusing this kitty, as subtle as it may be. He may have had cats all his life, but he's been abusing them if he's been doing that and he really doesn't know anything about them.

Do you really think any cat would choose to be dangled by it's legs or thighs? Do you see them dangling themselves from anything in the house or a tree? Cats very much need to feel safe and in control of their environments and that's generally very firmly on all fours. I'm surprised cats don't run away from him - as a matter of fact, his behavior is one of the reasons why cats are skittish - people have been doing that kind of crap to them for hundreds of years.

Would he do that with a puppy or a baby and think it was not abusive? Your hubby, sorry to say, needs to learn something about how to treat animals and I wouldn't let him near my cat unless he stopped that kind of behavior.

If the cat seems to enjoy this, there is no harm. If the cat, however, acts hurt or runs from your husband, it's abuse. Tell him to grow up a little and show more respect for the cat.
I have had cats, like your husband, for over 50 years, but find that my feline babies respond much better to love and respect, rather that rough play.

Oh my god. What does the cat say. Does he cry? Try to get away? Does he like to play like this? I have one cat that love to be picked up by tail. He will even bang against you to do it. Do not even think about it with the other two.
Use the cat as your judge.

if he does this to cats, how do you think he'd treat people? Sounds like he has a twisted sense of humor and no compassion for animals, and i bet he has the same amount for people. Try stringing him up by his legs against his will and see how he likes it. Remember, Jeffrey Dahmer started by abusing animals, then moved on to humans.

I never heard of that one before. I have cats and never dangle them. You should ask a vet about this one, he might pull a bone out of socket with that kind of play.
