No, it was not harsh. Your boyfriend was not clueless. He was just a very selfish person. He knew what he wanted, and what he wanted was to please himself, and so that was exactly what he did.......Pleased himself. At a sports bar.
You did the right thing. Go with someone who is into you as much as you are into him, not someone who cares nothing but himself and his " wants ".

If that was the only reason, then it sounds more like you were looking for an excuse. Yes, it was harsh if you are in a commited relationship.
In reality, there are a lot tougher situations that a couple will face than forgeting one's birthday. I think you feel under-appreciated and this new guy doesn't take you for granted. Another reality that you'll have to face is that relationships have to mellow as they mature.
Good luck.

most guys dont care about dates like that..did he know it was your birthday when he took you to the sports bar?
but you dont need to worry yourself w/ whether or not your actions were too harsh. All that matters is that you are happy w/ yourself and the decisions you make, after all you are the one that has to live with them. If it pisses you off that dude forgot your birthday, then you dont need to judge it as too harshly, b/c his forgetfulness will only piss you off again in the future (say a wedding anniversary etc).
If you are cool w/ the decision, then no, it's not too harsh, and you should just move on.

Not to harsh at all..1 yr is plenty of time to remember and its your day he can forget about football for 1 day. its not even about materialistic things but just being acknowledged. So did you hook up with the guy from your class?
Happy Birthday by the Way!!!

While the sports bar stinks if that's not what you like...what the heck were you doing with another guy on a birthday date at a restaurant?

as jack@ssy as that was, it was harsh. Talk to your boyfriend about this. But then again, the cute guy in western civilizations class seems like a great guy! you jsut need to think in your head, what would make you happier.

You just answered your own question....you met Mr. Attentive two weeks ago....how can he possibly forget your birthday.....you have been with your boyfriend 1 year........yes it was harsh and what's more I think you base things on superficial things what matters is the background you have with your boyfriend......give him a break!

I'm not sure I would have dumped him. I would have talked to him about it and asked what was up with him forgetting. Also, does he know about you going to a "nice restaurant" with another guy? Not so sure a lot of men would have been ok with that.

...why were you going to a restaurant with another guy on your birthday?
That's completely out of line!
While your boyfriend may have seemed inconsiderate, you could have at least tried talking to him about how you feel!
You were more inconsiderate, going on a DATE with another guy.
Too harsh?
Not at all.
Your ex deserves someone loyal.
