I don't need them to get reception of TV stations. I just want to use them as ambient light.

There are a lot of tough to fix problems on old TVs that would make even a glow tough to get. The high voltage could have failed, the CRT filament could be broken, and if it is old enough one of the small tubes could have failed. If you just want them to glow you could open the back of the tv, pull off the plug on the back of the CRT, and look for the little glass nipple sticking out that is where the tube was sealed. Then carefully reach in and pinch that glass nipple so that it smashes and the air goes into the old CRT. I say carefully because you are at risk for the whole tube imploding with some major cuts resulting. Once the tube has air in it you could take a glass cutter and remove the neck of the CRT (eider tube at the back. Then you could slip in a skinny light bulb (tubular one like for picture frames or fishtanks) and make the hollow TV into a lamp. You could even get your favorite photo blown up as a transparency and glue it onto the inside face of the TV set so it will glow like a projection slide.

If I were you I would not do that. It is a lot of effort for a weird lamp. Try going to a free list like Freecycle and see if someone is giving away an old TV that does light up.
