Unless you're really rich, a one or two carat anything will be way too expensive. A nice gold chain with a golden heart locket would be very nice. There are some teriffic sales around valentines day. You could look for a ring that has another stone like sapphire with diamond chips, or rubies or garnet. Find out her birthstone, that would work too, unless its diamonds, so look it up yourself. Depends on how you feel, how you see your relationship ending and how far you are into it.
If you think it's fine to get her jewelry and you have the money. If you know that it won't mean more than love and not a promise of marriage or if you want to get engaged, then it's fine.
Maybe she shouldn't ask, but I guess any girl likes jewelry.

well man my gf talk's about me buying her jewelry all the time and i've always told her no but at one year i got her a promise ring and it's very nice so at one year it's ok but nothing before that.
