I feel for you having suffered badly once with depression and still suffering with it in a less painful way. If you don't think you are ready to come off them please tell your doctor why. A good doctor should never force someone off something non-addictive. I think he will reassess you if you tell him you still need them. If he does take you off them you can always change your doctor.
We are not always the best judges of whether we need anti-depressant medications or not. Those of us who suffer with depression that is. Medical doctors are better qualified than us; However we are the ones feeling the pain of depression which can sometimes be almost unbearable. And remembering that some anti-depressants were only designed to be used for 6 month periods(it could be slightly longer).Having said that, I have been on mine over two years now and may well be on them for life. I am not talking about Bi-polar disorder here. That is something I don't suffer with.It may require a much longer period of medications. Also-although these medications are extremely good and save lives the inner cause needs to be addressed too. So a good psychologist/counsellor or vicar or priest will give very good help. Our depression could be caused by many things. In my case-alcoholism,self pity, resentment, fear, guilt- at the way I have hurt others during my life, remorse, despair. My sins if you like. Also there were/are some things that I did of which I was/am deeply ashamed. All these I shared with God and another human being eventually when I found someone to trust. My depression lifted after this. I have to make amends to these people too because I believe God wants us to. There is a judgement day. Please don't doubt this.

Hmm, it depends on if you have anything major coming up in the next few months like exams, and which antidepressants you are coming off of.. I'd say that unless you have a fairly straight forward few months ahead of you, you are best waiting until a break. I waited until the summer to come off mine because I was then able to relax and hang out in the sun without anything piling up, and it worked a treat. If you do come off soon, make it so that your intake is reduced 3/4 weeks before Christmas, then you will be off them at Christmas and everything will be easy enough. Don't worry, I was scared I would become depressed again too, but I didn't, and the fact that your doctor wants you to come off them is a good thing. It means that they know you are ready, and that even if you aren't, they will give them back to you straight away and it will be like nothing happened I hope everything goes well (: x

I would explain to your doctor you don't believe you are ready to come off them and let the doctor be the judge, they know how long a person needs and the individual situations, give it time, i have only been on them two months and don't feel any where near to coming off them i feel like i did before i started taking them. Argue your case! Hope this helps.

Did he give you a reason why he want's you off of them? And are you suffering from a chemical depression or just the blues. If your depression stems from low levels of seretonins then you should not stop the anti-depressants. If this was a temporary fix for a phase of the blues, then wean yourself off of them as the doctor directs.
Good luck.

They are a good short term solution but they can't become a crutch.
You don't say which you take or how long you have been taking them, so it's difficult to comment further.
