I have a massive tooth ache and I am BROKE. I have ibuprofen and that helps me cope with the pain, but I can't take them for the rest of my life. I need the infection to go away. Will Cephalexin work? I don't want to take it if it isn't going to work, it will work for something later I am sure. Man if it will work I need to know. Please tell me.

A FULL REGIMEN of cephalexin (7 days) will kill bacteria that originate in the mouth. It is NOT the antibiotic of choice for a dental infection, and it is 3-4x more expensive than what you SHOULD be using (Penicillin) to kill those bacteria. Also, if the infection is long-standing, it will NOT work to kill the bacteria that do not use oxygen to survive (anaerobic bacteria), and they tend to be the most dangerous. Using less than a full regimen will subdue the infection, killing only the weakest, most antibiotic-prone organisms, and allow the most antibiotic-resistant ones to survive. Something tells me that if you have an antibiotic Rx lying around, you didn't follow the directions that came with it when it was given to you (if it was even yours in the first place). If the pain is NOT due to an infection, and is simply a deep cavity that hasn't made it into the nerve yet, it will not work for the pain. You need to see a dentist to let him determine the best course of treatment. Even if the antibiotic DOES work, you will not be removing the source of the infection which is the gums/tooth involved. Hence the problem WILL return. Feel better soon. See a dentist. Best of luck to you.

Please don't take medication that isn't prescribed for you. Even if it is medicine that you did not finish. (you should ALWAYS finish your antibiotic medicine even if you feel better). If that is what you have you do not have enough for a full regimen of the antibiotic. You might kill off the easy to kill bacteria and leave the more resistant ones. Creating an infection that is harder to get rid of. May not be the right antibiotic for your infection. Might need to take it for a longer period than your last infection also. You need to see a dentist for a prescription and take the pill/caps until they are all gone. Even this is not the cure for you tooth. The cause of the infection is the tooth. As long as it is there the infection will return. Need to take antibiotics first if you have swelling, then return a few days later to have the tooth out. Is there a dental school in your area? They are a bit more affordable. There are also some hospitals with an oral surgery department. (need to check if they will take teeth out) But, is not covered with medical insurance. Call a few offices and ask how much they charge for extractions. Simple and surgical...they should be able to give you an estimate. (maybe a couple hundred dollars but, worth not being in pain or having the infection spread). Good Luck!

Cephalexin For Tooth Infection

The short answer is no, for reasons that people who understand the situation have already explained UNLESS you have enough to get you through 7 to 10 days. If you don't, you will just be making things worse for yourself. Even if you take the antibiotic, you still need to get health care. It's a good idea to try to get worked on in a dental school--it's cheaper and if it's an emergency they'll see you right away. You might also just plead with a sympathetic dentist to help you out with an extraction, or to at least give you a prescription for some generic Penicillin V--it's pretty cheap. If you state where you live, I could check to see if there's a dental school or free health clinic available--you don't need to get an Rx from a dentist. Final long-term advice: vote the Republicans out of offfice; they're trying to eliminate all the health safety nets for people without money, in other words, they're trying to screw you even worse than you've already been screwed!

Whether your cat is indoor or not he needs to be on Advantage Multi or Revolution. What and where you are describing is commonly found in cats with FAD flea allergic dermatitis. You may not see fleas on him and he could of been bitten by one a month ago and it has led to this. We humans can bring fleas in from walking on grass into our home environment. A flea will lay in wait in a home environment waiting to find a host. Its the first move a vet would do is ensure your cat was on prevention from fleas, mites and heartworm. Likely they would prescribe antibiotics if they appeared not to be healing. Cephalexin 500 is far too much and honestly if you cant even finish your own antibiotics you wont with your cat either. Im not trying to be a jerk its just that cats fight tooth and nail against being medicated. A liquid antibiotic of clavamox would be best An injection of Convenia would be great but far too expensive. I would clip all the hair where ever there are any scabs with a clipper. You can buy one for 12 bucks. This allows the air to get to the area and keeps it free of debris. Go to the pet store and look for a skin cream or ointment that may be called panalog or animax. It is an antifungal, antibacterial, antihistimine and low dose steroid that may do the trick. If you can not find that exact product you want an antifungal and antibacterial skin prep. You may be able to find a spray prep that has these properties just make sure there is little to no alcohol in it. Cats hat the smell of alcohol and it can sting . You may also want to add omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to his diet as they will decrease inflammation and help skin and coat health.. If she does not seem to be improving after a week or she gets more scabs take her somewhere and get her help. Many people must be in your same boat living in Hawaii so there has to be small clinics or organizations to help people with pets in need. Keep looking online. Ask friends and co workers if they know of anywhere who bills or offers discounted services. Trust me there are good people out there that can help you just got to seek them out! Good luck Stay away from the antibacterial shampoos as they are caustic on healing skin. If you are afraid he will lick off ointment he needs an ecollar!!! He needs the treatment so get him the ecollar!

The cheapest way to make the infection (and of course the pain...) to go away is with penicillin. If you are not allergic, this brad-spectrum antibiotic should help you with your problem. However, you need to see your dentist to be sure you do have an infection or its only pain caused by swollen gums, cavities, etc...
