Before you go out and spend megabucks on camera equipment decide what you want to take pictures of, People, animals, scenery? I would also suggest that you take a basic photography course. If there is not a school in your city that offers a course, take one on line. Your state university should offer one. OK now that you have knowledge visit a good camera store. Not knowing where you live I can not suggest one. I shop at Wolf camera. If by this time you have not picked out a camera tell them what you are interested in. They will show you many products. They will not tell you what is best that is not their job. Go home and research each camera. then buy. Another hint you may want to get a small point and shoot first 2-300 $ rather than a larger investment of a SLR.8-1500$ Good luck and have fun.

People looking to get into photography should first consider what it is exactly that they want to do. If you're simply looking to "take pictures" then a standard "point-and-shoot" camera may be all the gear you need.

If you're more ambitious and decide to buy an SLR with interchangable lenses, you'll obviously have to budget appropriately.

The trouble with point-and-shoot cameras is they're not made to last for very long. When they break down, it's often more expensive to repair than it is to simply buy a new one.

Do some research at your local library and consider taking classes in photography - that way you'll know for sure how deeply involved (and invested) you want to be.

Also, if you go the SLR route, consider buying used gear. It's plentiful on Craigslist and your local used camera shop.

One last note - Nikon and Canon have the best reputations for reliability. Also, most of their lenses are backwards compatible, meaning that a lens designed this year will fit cameras designed 20 years ago.

It's easy.

Go to www.photo.net and www.dpreview.com ... look around. Buy a good book from Yahoo! Auctions or Half.com. Be sure to buy a book. Very pleasant and you will learn alot.

Finally, get yourself a digital point and shoot that has German glass. Kodak w/Schneider, Panasonic, or Leica. Get the best glass. (Once you have taken a picture it is forever.)
