How about everything south to the Panama Canal (Including the canal itself. Which I believe use to be part of Columbia) and we can keep it as a vacation resort area. Call it South Arizona or The Ameri-Mex Territory. We already support most of it's economy anyway. Leave Canada free. It's beautiful and still greatly unspoiled.

Canada?

And I think it is a terrible idea. Mexico doesn't provide universal 'free' education to its poor people which is why schools in our border states are failing, and a big reason why illegal immigration has hit the 'interior' as the illegals seek better schools. Formalizing the situation rather than enforcing our laws will only make that worse.

I don't,I think its a narrow minded view of a huge problem.I say secure the borders with our active duty armed military. Then begin the systematic deportation of every illegal alien.
The only country that would profit from open borders is the smallest and most corrupt and that's Mexico. No it will not happen in your life time and the cost in human life will be a heavy price to pay Most legal Americans will not sit by and watch this happen. There would be blood running in our streets.

I assume you're joining Powhatan, Tecumseh and Sitting Bull in taking a firm line against uninvited immigrants.

I am writing this as an old-line white boy, who is eligible for membership in both Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of Confederate Veterans and whose latest-coming ancestor washed up these shores in the late 1770s. The Mexicans, Chinese, and other recent immigrants are a positive influence on this country, just as were the Irish, Jews, Greeks, Poles, and others who arrived after my people.

For the most part (and I recognize that some migrants will be as pin-headed as my idiot third cousins in the Mississippi Klavern of the KKK), they contribute enormously to the USA. Illegal immigrants pay way more in taxes than they receive in government benefits. Migrants work like dogs, build businesses, educate their children, and help us understand the rest of the world.

Migrants assimiliate much easier here than in the welfate states of Western Europe. Jobs are available for them without displacing native-born Americans who want to work. Moreover, we are lucky that the bulk of the migrants come from Mexico and other Latin countries that share about 90 pct of our cultural DNA. Mexicans in particular are baseball-playing Christians who have the highest rate of marrying outside of their ethnic group of any segment of the population--which reduces the danger of that Brown Menace, This means that my grandchildren are likely to be darker than I, with more Spanish phrases thrown into their English, and with a taste for spicier food than my parents--but this is the sort of normal evolution that led to the addition of thousands of Norman French words to Anglo-Saxon.

I just hope American keeps the sense of welcome and assimilation that has made us the greatest country in the world.

Me! It's true, too. Sad but oh well. I think people in other countries should start suing us :p We're willing to take in mexican kids but not African, Polish, Russian etc. And when they do come here they don't have the opportunity to learn in their native language :/
