I have no Idea how to use AZUREUS?

I've been using it for months and have successfully downloaded quite a lot of files but I want to maximize it's features and speed.. I have Azureus 2.5.0.2 and it doesn't want to update to the latest version. It keeps on hanging when I restart it. When I try to check the settings, it often hangs up and I have to close it. What do I do? Exactly.
