Why does Visa need your social security number when you sign up for a Visa Reloadable Prepaid Greendot Card? And if you have a child, why do they need the child's and your SSN?

It is not a Gift Card. It is the other RELOADABLE one.

Without it, they can't really hit your credit rating.

It called; "Red Tape". It not matter why, you just need to do it. But, the quickie on this is to keep an eye on who is who. Two SSN's show up from different people and they will investigate.
This happens with Divorced people all the time with the IRS. They both try to claim the child as a deduction and the same number on two separate 1040 forms raise the red flag.
For Trivia; I have an old SSN Card and in small print at the bottom it say; Never give your SSN to anyone, yet, in our society you can never get anything done without it! lol

I agree with the poster that likens this to a 'gift card'
I would think that the only reason that they would request your 'ss number' is if the amount that you request is unusually high.
They might have to report amounts over xx number of dollars to the irs so that these cards cant be used as defacto money shelters for drug dealers, terrorist supporters etc.
Just a guess, no shread of proof!
I say go to the store.
Problem with going to the store is that the card does not or will not have your (or yoru child's) name on it.

Because your child does not pay the bill.
All credit / $$ / spending history is tracked at the Big 3 agencies by SS # , not your name.
Because in the business world , you are your SS # , it is critical that you safegaurd that # and only give it out for necessary business.
Never leave your card where anyone can see it nor carry it in your wallet. Leave it home in a security box.

i had one, did not need to give my social. its a prepaid card, and i have never needed to give my social for a pre-paid card. are you signing up for this on-line? seems to me its a identity theft scam. go to the store and buy one. your not signing up for credit, your signing up for what is for all intents and purposes, a gift card.

p.s, i KNOW its not a gift card, but they are similar. the green dot is is a pre paid debt card that you can add more money too. you should not need a social for that
