My male cockateil has been a little off as far as the pooping goes this past week. I can't think of anything different that he's eaten. He has not been around any other animals. There have been a couple of days when he has had his poop all over his tail feathers. This morning there was a huge clump just hanging from his feathers underneath his body. It's a very light green in color instead of his normal darker color. Please help! Any ideas would be greatful! Thanks.

I don't understand why you haven't taken the poor bird to the vet. Poops that are sticking to the vent may be because of sickness or something in the way inside of the vent, like a tumor for example. It's not worth the risk to wait it out.

Take him to see an avian vet. Only they can determine what's wrong and what you can do. For now, I would keep him in a warm area with slightly higher humidity.

This sounds like a serious medical problem. Fecal matter should NEVER stick to a bird's feathers. Please get your bird to an Avian vet as soon as possible. In the mean time, keep your bird warm and away from drafts. This will help him to hang on until the vet can see him.

Whatever you do, DO NOT give over the counter medications to your bird. They will mask what is going on an just cause more harm in the long run. They rarely help.

You can give your bird unflavored pedalite (baby and infant section) to help keep his electrolytes up.

From Poopology:

As a part of your poop patrol, you'll want to also keep an eye on your bird's vent area and the cloaca, the sphincter muscle that controls elimination. The vent area should always be clean and dry and the cloaca should remain fairly tightly closed, with no odd growths. Moisture, matted stools or extra tissue in the area warrant closer inspection by a vet.

Get the male to the vet and the female additionally to get a necropsy. If it grew to become into some thing contageous, interior the nutrition, or airborne, you will might desire to verify the male does not seize it too. The male would be superb, only provide him lots of love and interest. the story of lovebirds not surviving with no mate is untrue. All birds can bond with the different fowl, and if one dies, the different will flow by a mourning era the place they only look unhappy - simply by fact they're. they often does not die from it. i could wait in case you intend on getting him yet another chum simply by fact he might reject a sparkling fowl besides.
