guys dont you realise that despite what you say to each other
what proof you feel you may have for or against
no one can tell you that you are wrong for believing what you do
atheists ... you know you had to come to your conclusion all by yourself
religious .... you know that what you feel in your heart cannot be felt by anyone else
arent you wasting time trying to prove each other wrong when the very thing you are trying to prove is unprovable ?
so rather than trying to convert each other , cant your time be used more constructivly by simply trying to understand each other ?

I agree to the extent that bashing one another isn't going to bring anyone to understanding. I disagree to the extent that educating someone to beliefs sometimes requires an argument against something they believe or don't believe.
I have the deepest respect for atheists and all of those on a positive spiritual path.
Understanding one another comes in many forms. Sometimes, it takes a wake-up call from someone who doesn't believe what you do to spur you to explore what it is that you do believe.

Christianity uses fear and intimidation to support it (eternity in hell), athiesm uses scientific (or plauible) fact to support it (the sun does NOT revolve around the earth, nor is the earth the centre of the universe). Two completely different approaches to a decision making process.
Christians are happy to accept, athiest will always ask questions and seek to discover.
We all know history is resplendent with examples of people killing, maiming and torturing in the name of their one true god, when's the last time you heard of athiests announcing a pogrom?
We're retarded by around 1,000 years of potential scientific progress because of religious dogma (and yes there is proof of that - look into the histories of people such as Galen or Galileo).
Christians are now pissed because we have the right to announce and be proud of our beliefs publicly and without fear of castigation. They had control of this country and are now loosing it.
Besides, go to youtube - search for "Crazy Christian Lady" and tell me that if there is a god he'd really want something like that offering him their love.
Personally I wish there was a god, I'd love the idea that there is some final justice and reward to how you live your life - and one thing I can say for sure is that I'd be more likely to have earned a place in heaven than most of the Christians I've ever know.

I think what frustrates atheists, is the trouble that religion appears to generate. They believe they can improve the world by removing the outdated belief systems.
However, human nature being what it is..... if we all stopped believing in god, we would soon be using something else as an excuse to steal, rape, murder etc.
I have said this before - until atheists can speak simply to the hearts of people (like the great religious philosophers have), they will always appear like they are smug or superior.
Religious groups merely have an over-simplistic and emotional picture of the world.

Thanks Pangel. More thought provocation!
Like Acid, I enjoy the ribbing. I rather think of it as the playful fighting you see between lion cubs. I don't tend to view it in terms of 'converting.' But maybe I'm wrong. Certainly there are those who enjoy the conflict, though it'd be a shame that was all there was as Shell says.
Certainly I think like you and GALL, this forum is its most interesting when used for the exchange of ideas. I've found it to be the widest selection of viewpoints and doctrines I know and, although I appreciate you don't like the bickering, perhaps that's the price to be paid for a broad 'church'?
While a forum of 'understanding' sounds fine, perhaps it's necessary to let people 'vent' a bit occasionally to get across the depth of their feelings?
I'm gonna have to think about this one!

you can't ever prove a negative - no matter what - ever!!!!
even though i see this as an attempt at some sort of peace between the atheists and religious, this is a crappy attempt, because the language that you use favors the religious
who says that atheists don't feel in their heart that there is no god - the only difference is that we actually have more proof to prove what we feel in our hearts than a book
as an atheist, i'm not trying to convert anyone, i'm just trying to tell some people how dumb and judging that they're being - i'm trying to open their eyes to a new way of thinking - the same thing that the religious are doing for us.
if you don't like the conflict - then get out of this section - the conflict is what this place is all about

Pangel, you are very tolerant and that is well and good. I am not trying to de-convert anyone. But I will not tolerate discrimination (be it against homosexuals or anyone) and I will not tolerate the corruption of science by pseudoscience like creationism.
For the rest, as long as they do not intrude upon my life it is live and let live for me.
Oh, and I enjoy ribbing the particularly dogmatic ones, that is true. Nobody is perfect.

Agreed. 90% of the posts in this section are useless bickering between the hardcore atheists and the hardcore Christians. They're both so predictable, I know what the answers are going to be before I even click on the questions. The same people ask the same things over and over, and get the same responses again and again. They both need to grow the hell up.

I agree.
You don't need a god to be spiritual. But for some it works better. Most 'religious' persons have been baptised before they could consciously make the choice for themselves. After all, Jesus didn't get baptised until he made his choice in adulthood.
People also can de-baptise from their religions if they wish.
I believe in the universe, infinity, love, peace and harmony.

It is not up to anyone to prove the non existence of God, as there is nothing to prove, it is up to the god botherers and religious lunatics to prove that there is actually a god which is impossible to prove because there is no such thing.
