A "Long Face" is a way of saying someone looks sad. In this case the jokes is that the bar tender is using the words to literally mean a long face (in measurement / dimension). The joke is the surprise of it not meaning that the horse is looking sad.

You know how horses have oval-shaped long heads?

Long face- a long face
Long face- to be sad

So it either means a long head, or to be sad.

Therefor, the joke is:

A horse goes into a pub, walks up to the bar, and asks for a pint of beer. the barman looks at the horse, leans over and says in a quiet voice ''why the long face (Sad face)?''

As you know, horses have long heads.

You and your English teacher probably do not frequent bars or stables. You would need a reference to have the desired effect. That phrase is normal in a bar and refers to how a person carries themselves when they rest themselves down into a bar stool. Many people are at bars to get numb. The long face is the appearance of the horse too. The humor is the effect of having many correct associations to the same input or phrase. In this case just two and hence the low impact of the joke for some of us. For others it is quite enough to get a smile.

Oh and perhaps spelling "which" - "w-i-t-c-h" may be the other indicator as to why the humor of this joke eludes you.

Horses have long faces. The bartender sometimes ask "why the long face" if a person in the bar is sad but in this case he asked it because the horse had a long face.

The phrase "why the long face?" means why are you sad or depressed.

A horse literally has a long face.

When John Kerry won the Democratic nomination the same joke was going around ... "why the long face"?
