Most pet stores, as already said, will put them in a little cardboard box. It may actually be better off in a small travel cage because you'll be using a smaller cage like that when you have to transport it somewhere, the vet's for example (which you should do within seven days of receiving the bird to make sure you're getting a healthy bird) or anywhere it's too inconvenient to bring it in its normal cage.

Keep a bird away from the kitchen, direct sunlight, doors, windows, drafts, bathrooms (cleaning fumes), anywhere where commercial cleaners are used or stores. Drafts and fumes can kill birds, the fumes from cooking and overheated non-stick cookware can kill birds in seconds. The best place to keep a bird is in a highly trafficked area where it can learn to be socialized and open to meeting new people. Also, since birds are so flock oriented, they need to be in a very social setting or they'll feel lonely.

It's not your question, but I find it's relevant to a new budgie owner, but here's a previously asked question about general budgie needs: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am6PxW7koSxa7DSUWQX_N0zsy6IX?qid=20070128065839AAK1r8J&show=7#profile-info-1928068f5d8dd68d1c0c15029ce8bb8faa

The question about transportation was answered for you. put it in a box or a pet carrier. If you do put it in a box, make sure you punch some holes in it so the bird can get some air and also, do not keep the bird in that box for more than 2 hours. As far as toxins, everyone gave great ideas already the only thing I have to add is that teflon coated or (non-stick) pans give off dangerous fumes that are potentially deadly for the bird. I cannot stress how important it is to keep the bird AWAY from the kitchen. Also, air freshners and perfumes are VERY harmful.
On another note, I have some budgies and I love them to death, they are GREAT companions and very very Loving and playful. You should take the bird out of its cage while you are home. leave the cage doors open so that he can come and go as he pleases, making sure of course that you 'pet proof' your home. You should close doors and windows and take away any mirrors or harmful chimicals. Think of it as having a 3 yr old child, 'kid proof' LOL. If you are not home, you should not leave the bird out unsupervised. Some ppl might tell you stories against that but take it from me, they can get into a lot of trouble if they are left unattended.
You should visit www.lisashea.com for ANY questions you have. This site outlines everything there is to know about parakeets/budgies. From taming and hand training, to foods, to harmful chemicals, to biting problems, to showering with your bird. It's great, it's helped me out a lot and I'm sure it will help you out too! :0) Good Luck!

Well, usually a pet store will supply a small cardboard box for the bird to go home in but i suggest you bring along a shoe box or other small container and a towel to cover it in. I would use a container with a few small homes so the bird can breath.

Now the best place for the cage would be in your living room or a place where there is constant prescence. Budgies are social birds, so put it in a common area. ( except in the kitchen and your bedroom.

Budgies are naturally curious and end up getting hurt from their natural curiousity. To keep them safe, check the surrounding area. some things to keep them away from them are:
1. poisonous houseplants
2. glue and other varnishes
3. bookshelves and cabinets
4. chemicals
5. fumes and smoke
6. candles and open fires
7. Washrooms
*. windows
9. avacado and other foods
10. garbage cans

P.S.: A fun toy for yur budgie depends on what he likes to play with. My budgies enjoy playing with a ball of paper that is wrapped around a spray of millet and I also made them this toy where it is a pipe cleaner with a bell on one end and some paper onthe other. Also, you can make them homemade treats by mixing seeds and honey and putting it on a popsicle stick.

The pet stores usually send the birds home in a small cardboard box. I know I am getting a bird today from a shelter and I have to bring the cage. So you should really check with the place that you are getting the bird from (if it is Petco, PetsMart, or anything like that they have boxes)

The best place to keep a bird is away from the heat source. They should not be directly by that. Also, birds should not be directly by a window.

It is also not safe to keep your bird in or near a kitchen (just in case they get out and fly in - clipping their wings is always a good idea).

Also, make sure you don't have ceiling fans on, candles burning, windows/doors open when you are opening the cage.

This is a great book that taught me a lot about how to care for my parakeet (a parakeet and budgie are the same thing) :

Parakeet: Your Happy Healthy Pet by Julie Rach Mancini

You can get it at Borders for $12.99 or cheaper at www.amazon.com

That book also tells you how to train your bird to get them on your finger. I did it with mine. He even knows a few tricks now and he is only 8 months old.

hey congratulations on the new friend budgie there great companion that love getting and giving attention.

your pet store will give you a card board boxto put him in this is small and dark so your bird friend wont get overwhlmed by all the new sights.

have the cage set up were the bird can watch you guys in normal daily activity be sure its not to close to a plant he could eat and get sick off of and also make sure he is not around any good things he could soil on at the same time be sure that you have easy access to play with him and give him attention.

after he gets used to the place start going to thw cage every day and talking to im wile giving him food or a treat so he gets used to you and your voice. wait a wile until he puffs up and is happy to see you then give him a treat from your hand. continue this for a while soon he will jump right into your hand and you two can play together for hours

The pet shops have cardoard boxes they put them in.....put it in a place where it will be surrounded by people most of the time. Talk to it a lot.....show it who's boss. Keep the bird away from avacado. Avacado kills them. When you mop or something like that.......put the bird in a well ventilated rooom. THe bird could die from the chemical smells if not in a well ventilated room. Keep it away from a light wind drafts. Clean the cage with warm water no chemicals. Hope you have a tweet time with your bird.

if u dont want to bring the cage, then they will most likely give u a box to put it in. u want to have the bird in a popular and social place, a room with lots of action in it, like a family or living room. keep the bird away from the kitchen. the chemicals for non-stick pans shortens the life span of the bird. they like noise, and will get louder as the room gets louder. and they like bells and mirrors. they r very social and enjoy company so u might want to get another 1 other same gender. hopes this helps.

they will put in into a cardboard box to transport it. The best place to keep it is where the family lives mostly like living room, den etc..Do not keep in kitchen as the smells will bother it. Cover him up at night though if you watch tv so he can rest. At least until he is used the the noises. Keep him away from drafty windows too.

budgies are very curious birds, the question on transport was answered for you. Keep it away from eating anything that could be toxic to it. They will try to nibble anything. some plants are poison to birds so you may want to look your house plants up online for toxic level just to make sure they are safe.
