People interpreted everything they didn't scientifically understand as god. If a volcano erupted they thought it was god. if a flood happened it was god. Now we are smart enough to know better.

There have been many times in past where people did not hear much from God:
1 Sam 3:1
3:1 Then the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.
NKJV
He doesn't speak much in public when people are not willing to listen. But He has always spoken to those who have become His children through faith.
But He speaks in many various ways and not always with an audible sound of the voice.

Before the printing press was invented, people listened to the preachers and priests tell them what God wanted. There was greater control then, and religious leaders were feared as being directly chosen by God. Now, people have access to almost anything, and they can read and interpret for themselves.
Think of the thousands of people who were praying for intervention in the World Trade Towers. Jesus said that if a person has faith that is the size of the grain of mustard (very small in size), and if any two shall agree on anything in his name, it shall be done. Yet, despite the many believers who had great faith, they all died a horrible death.
So, then, if God still has the ability to speak (and to act), it appears that he has very little interest these days -- unlike what was taught about events from centuries ago.

God seems to has spoken so much because that is what we found written. We read the Bible and it seems that God is always speaking. But how much time goes by between communications?
Plus, I feel God does still talk to people in today's time. We as a society has dismissed it as untruthful or irrelevant because of our fall away from His grace. Those who still pray and spend time developing their relationship with God find Him communicating with them.

3 or 4 thousand years? He spoke through Christ about 2000 years ago, through Muhammad about 1400 years ago, through the Bab about 160 years ago and through Baha'u'llah about 130 years ago -- I wouldn't call that "nothing"!

It was all an effort by ancient humans to make the universe human, and so they concocted a human God. That was what was speaking.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever. It's just us humans who aren't listening anymore. Abraham or Moses or the Bible figures of old never had television or iPods or Xboxes now, did they?

Maybe you are just not listening. Does it have to be a booming voice from the heavens for you to believe God continues to speak to his children?

God doesn't bother to speak to men anymore, seeing they just use the word as an excuse for war. God speaks to the humble and crushed.
