how do they get the cranes down from multi-storey buildings?

Just like when they put them up. Cranes are designed to be assembled in parts, and similarly disassembled piece by piece.

put a mobile crane at the side and take it down a section at a time

They take them down piece by piece. Its not to difficult. I have been a crane engineer.
