Well you mentioned it, iPod and books, but also I like taking my portable DVD player or laptop and a couple of good movies.

I am going overseas this summer and I have been pondering this myself. Something that will kill a lot of time for me is Bejeweled, the computer game so I will pretty much have to bring that or some other computer game with me. This is if you are talking about what to bring to kill time on a plane.

As far as a must have for my trip itself, my camera. I want to capture every great moment.

When traveling overseas, unless you are really familiar with the place you going, a good guidebook will make things much easier. If possible, study more than one of them before you leave on your trip and bring the one that appears to be the most helpful.

Other than a passport, money (possibly in the form of traveler's checks), a credit card and an ATM card - travel light - bring as little as possible. Internet Cafes are common in Europe if that is where you are traveling, so you should not need to bring a computer. If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair in case they get lost or broken.

A blanket/shawl and magazine of course only after you take the basics like toothbrush, clothes, toiletries etc. With all that sound in the airplane from the movies they show and from the plane itself I don't know if it's possible to listen to you i-pod even at the max volume.

Don't forget to bring a country-specific converter/adapter if you pack any electric items (laptop, curling iron, etc.)!
