We are going to the Texas Coast, and while researching the fishing in the area, I got to thinking. How does one catch an Octopus if so desired?

Similar to angling, you would be surprised. Lures, called lehos, are used to catch octopus. A fisherman held the cord of the lure in one hand and made it dance in the water, until the octopus took hold of the bait, then the fisherman pulled the cord up swiftly, imbedding the lure's hook securely, so the octopus could be hauled aboard.

Another, more sport orient technique was octopus wrestling, which involved a diver grappling with an octopus in shallow water and dragging it to the surface. Octopus wrestling was relatively popular in the coastal United States during the 1960s. At that time, annual World Octopus Wrestling Championships were held in Puget Sound, Washington. The event was televised and attracted up to 5,000 spectators each year. Trophies were awarded to the individual divers and teams who caught the largest animals. Afterwards, the octopuses were either eaten, given to the local aquarium, or returned to the sea.

In April 1963, 111 divers took part in the World Octopus Wrestling Championships. A total of 25 North Pacific Giant Octopuses were captured that day. They ranged in weight from 4 to 57 pounds.

Octopus like cave like shelters, so often crawl into small containers that can be later lifted from the water after giving an octopus time to find and claim them. It is said that one Mediterranean octopus species has been able to extend its range because of humans disposing of aluminum beer cans and glass beer bottles while at sea. The octopus needs cover in order avoid predators and the beer can keeps it safe. It can even drag the can along with it as it explores formerly off limits open bottom areas for food, and can hide in the can when it feels threatened.

The only ones I've caught have been on the bottom, with dead bait. One day I wound in my line and found a hip flask hanging from the end, on examination there was a small octopus inside. It had taken the bait, gotten hooked, and crawled into its "cave". An hour later, I caught another, in a beer bottle. (This was from a pier in King Harbor, Redondo CA.)

I've also caught then off jetties and boats, but no others in bottles.

I find it easiest to lure an octupus to the surface of the water with candy bars, and then lasso it just like the people at the rodeos do with cattle and such.
