I have a diabetic cat who has been treated extensively for both ear mites and yeast in his ears by the vet. The vet has exhausted all he has. I'm inclined to think this is yeast as diabetics are more prone to yeast and mites would have been, at least, affected by treatment. This is now to the point where it affects his balance as it is deep within his ears. The best I've had to offer him is to clean out the ears frequently but, of course, I can't get deep within. He is constantly miserable. Does anyone have any suggestions to treat this problem?

Yes, diabetes does cause other health problems and issues with the medicines themselves on occasion.

I have a long haired white cat that we rescued from outdoors that had chronic ear infections and a dog.

If you have other cats around the house, they may be transmitting something back and forth. Your cat could be digging at his ears constantly which makes it worse.

If your cat is patient enough, you may have to plan to resort to doing ear cleanings daily for no less than one month, possibly more... just to get the ears a chance to heal. This is what worked for me, except the cat was feral/ not nice, and I had to wear gloves. But now he is my best friend after so much bonding time. I think that my cat thinks that I am stupid though for poking him in the ear every day for two months in his case.

Clean out the moisture when you are finished cleaning out the ear. Don't leave them too damp from the cleaning. He may need another dose of meds as you do this to him. After a while, you won't even really need ear cleaner so much as the cotton to clean his ears.

I do not like cotton balls or q-tips. What I use are what is called "Cotton Squares" that are also in the cosmetics sections. Much easier to use when cleaning pet ears than cotton balls.

This chronic psycho ear infection that our cat had was over five yrs ago. Now he only seems to get them like once a year and we are on it immediately with the constant cleaning until it clears up and he has been doing fine.

I just jumped over and did a quick search, there is lots of general information on the internet about yeast in cats ears. One of the things they do mention is allergies from food or inhalants which can create a situation of being prone to yeast infections and also the recurring nature of yeast infections.

Because I don't know what you have done with your vet, I suggest you do a general seach under cat ear yeast infection and compare what you find to what your vet has done.
If your vet is telling you he's exhausted all his options, you may want to consider trying another vet. Check with other pet owners about how happy they are with their vets and try to get a referral.

I know I go a little overboard with my pets but for very serious issues I have gotten second and third opinions and it really paid off the last time did it because I found my vet of the last 15 years. At that time I saw three vets on a very serious malignant tumor issue and they all had very different opinions about what to do. The third vet I saw did a bunch of research, even called UC Davis to clear up conflicting information she found. I did the surgery and radiation treatment she recommended and darn if that dog didn't live for another 7 years, well beyond the normal life span for her breed.

I'd also suggest talking with a specialist in treating cats with diabetes. There's no reason your kitty should be suffering. And doing your own research on the internet, as somebody suggested. It could be from his medication or an unrelated problem.

I don't know if this is a good idea for cats, but I do know mineral oil is good for cleaning out human ears - just a drop. But check with a vet first. You also want to make sure whatever you're doing to clean out his ears isn't pushing the wax or other discharge further into his ear.

Good luck - would love to hear when you find a solution.

You need to get a second opinion from another vet. There are several ear wash solutions, but if he has been treated for mites they would be gone. If you note a smell from the cat's ears this is also an indicator of yeast infection. Trust your instincts, you know your pet.

I am so sorry about your cat, mine have never been with those serious health problems. If mine get mites, or such in their ears, I use warm soapy water, or some warm, olive oil. I thought yeast type infections could be treated with antibiotics?( or maybe too many hmm)
Not being smart, but do you think he could eat yougurt like we do with the live cultures in it to help? Couldn't hurt could it?(sugar free yougurt?
Hope things get better, wish you could up-date us ...

I suggest taking your cat to a higher ranked vet, one that has a higher degree in animal sciences. They have more knowledge towards anything in the line of animals. Also, go to PetSmart, Petco, WalMart or any other store that sells animal products and find a yeast killer.
