You dont have to buy software every year. I go to www.irs.gov and click on e-file. there are many companies that let you file your federal returnfor free if you made less than $52,000 in 2006. the state returns cost about $10-$15 so it's worth it. Give it a try. Good luck.

You are implying 2 questions and are getting 2 different answers. Please note that the tax preparation software you used last time will not work again. Whatever you use, you need the 2007 version to prepare your tax return for 2006.

I have never paid for software nor paid to file fed . . .
(and I've efiled for several years now) paid <$20 for state,
I use TaxAct and unless you have a complicated business return , check them out . . .(my 1040 is pretty complicated & comes out OK)
Click on the 2007 free file link and scroll thru those,
TaxAct & others are in there

There are no "upgrades" for tax software as it is relatively cheap anyway.

If want to use the software again, you need to buy a new version.
