I know it happened in Queens...because that's where I lived at the time..I'm not sure where else. There was no electricity for one day and one night...it came back sometime at dawn I think. People were so scared because they thought it could be another terrorist attack. Turns out it wasn't, there was just a problem with the electrical plant.

When the system is being strained due to high usage, Con Ed has a history of cutting off electricity in poorer areas in order to avoid even larger blackouts. I don't think that was the case this time though - as someone pointed out, the Upper East Side (including the mayors home and office) went out. The fact is, the city's infrastructure is very old and needs to be upgraded. At least maybe you can take some comfort in knowing that as a New Yorker, you actually pay less per kilowatt than people do in other big cities around the world. The principle is affordability OVER reliability.

Which Blackout are you referring to? The more recent Blackout of 2003 that affected the Northeastern US and Canada or the more famous blackout of 1977 (which was more localized to New York City)? I'll speak about the blackout of 1977 . . .

The blackout of 1977 (July 13-14) was localized to New York City. What caused it was an overload of circuit breakers caused by lightning strikes. The backup systems were inadequate at the time to re-route power causing overloads in other systems which within an hour caused the entire NYC system to shut down. It would take until late the next day for power to be fully restored.

People were scared because in the city, certain neighborhoods literally were almost burned and looted to the ground. Particularly, poorer New York neighborhoods (Harlem, Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, Jamaica in Queens) were hit hard. Entire rows of stores were looted and burned. Some neighborhoods suffered severe economic downturns and are just now seeing a return to business since the effects of the blackout.

WEll it happened to about half the country, and peopel were scared, because they had no light! duh. Yes all lights were out. But mine came on after a day, but my dads house's came on after 4 days. It was all kind of random, so i dont really know how long each were out.
