The camera is a Canon 30D set on auto the spots look like little gold suns.

I took the pictures with the sun behind me

probably dust particles, reflecting off the sun (thats behind you)...you get them also when taking them in the dark in dusty environments when your flash goes off...

Settings alone won't cure this. It appears you are shooting "straight on" at the sun. A polarizer may help some. Best chance of not having lens flare is to NOT point directly at the sun. Sometimes changing angles very slightly will get rid of flare. I shoot sunsets a 1/250 and f4.0 with a polarizer. I don't use a lens hood. But I never point directly at the sun.
