i have worked in the aviation industry since 1992, so here are the BEST tips.

1) always purchase tickets at least 3 weeks (21 days) prior to departure
2) depart sunday through thursdays (fridays and saturdays are always more expensive)
3) use Travelocity's 'Fare Watcher' where you could put two city pairs like, Newark to Los Angeles, and any time the fare drops by a certain dollar amount YOU choose, they immediately send you an e-mail notifying you of the change.
4) check the non-major airlines, Jet Blue, Frontier, America West, Air Tran, Southwest. These airlines sometimes will not show up in regular searches because they do not have inter-airline agreements. I know it is a lot more work on your part, but go to their web sites and do your searches there. Also look on their pages for 'Web deals' sometimes they do have specials.
5) Search with alternate airports (if you can leave or arrive at other airports... i.e. it is much cheaper usually to fly into Oakland International than San Francisco, and still easy to get to where you want.
6) Look for frequent flyer sign-up perks, like discounts on your first ticket.
7) remain flexible about departure or arrival times, connections, etc. Sometimes you might get the best price, but have two connections or a super early or very late departure time. Those often are discounted because they NEED to fill the jets during non-peak flying times.

I think for Newark to LA, Jet Blue might be the best option.

Good luck... just remember the research you do will usually pay off in a great find!
