You can often find heavy muslin in the larger sewing/craft shops such as JoAnn's or Michaels. But for really heavy canvas, you need either to speak to a sail maker or a tent maker and ask about their sources of canvas. Most of the muslin you'll find in a craft shop is 8 to 9 ounce weight, which is pretty substantial when compared to, say, linen bed sheets or shirt-making material. It really isn't the heaviest, though. You can also often find mattress ticking, which is pretty heavy stuff, but you may not want the typical blue and white striping that characterizes mattress ticks.
What you want is 10 ounce or 13 ounce tent cloth/sail cloth. Panther Primitives is one of the premiere tentmakers here in the US. You can type that name into your search engine, go to their web page and get an address where you can enquire about where they buy their heaviest canvas.
Good luck. There is a market, especially among people whose hobby is re-enacting various historic eras (the French and Indian War, the American Civil War, etc). We snap up well-made reproductions of period canvas goods like candy - but they MUST be patterned on authentic items of the period we're interested in. "Similar" is not good enough; it has to be as exact a reproduction as is humanly possible. You'll have competition, but it should be obvious that well-researched and well-made historic reproductions are imminently marketable. The folks who make and sell such things to the reenacting community are known as "sutlers". Good luck; we always welcome new blood into the sutler community.

Well, I used to do the living history thing and made my own stuff too, I bought all my canvas from JoAnn,s fabric store but any fabric store should have what you,re looking for. If not, ask them to order it.
Hope this helped.
