Though malnourished, and one can see the outline of the bones along their flesh, why is it the stomach alone is bloated? Is that because of accumulation of gas?

Malnorishment includes lack of protein in the body besides many other imp things like vitamins and minerals. The proteins provide osmotic pressure in the blood and helps retention of fluid,so when there is less proteins the osmotic pressure is decreased and the fluids are not retained within the capillaries and gets collected in the extra vascular spaces like the abdominal cavity which is called ascites, and appears as distension of the abdomen, also collection of flatus ie gas causes distensin :)

It's a symptom of a deficiency. I can't remember which one - but they are lacking a mineral or vitamin that they need. If you look at normal, healthy toddlers, you will notice that they are potbellied. That is because they don't really have room in their bodies for all their organs. Now, imagine that one of the organs is swollen - that's why the malnourished kids look so bloated.

Alright, I'm going on memory here, so just bear with me...

The condition to which you refer is called "kwashiokor" (sp?). I think the name originates from some tribal word for an evil spirit or something along those lines. The swelling that you see is predominantly the liver enlarging to something like 4 times it's normal size because it is called upon to synthesize needed proteins that are normally derived in a healthy diet. It isn't so much a sign of starvation as it is of not getting all the nutrients required for life from the available food supply.

In case you're wondering, this was imparted to me in a clinical chemistry class back while I was getting my AAS degree in lab science.

I'm to understand that it's the body's last attempt at saving itself. Basically, when there is no food in your stomach for a long enough time, the body begins to live off of your body fat. Apparently, the stomach balloons up during this process. People with this condition are very close to death.

That is actually common when the body starts eating away at the liver and kidneys due to a lack of essential amino acids. This causes bloating, and at that time, there is generally not a whole lot that can be done to help them survive.

I know a girl, i went to high school who was the body type you describe. She wouldn't gain weight anywhere but in her tummy. It was embarrassing for her because people always thought she was preggo. She lost some of it by doing ab workouts and getting in some cardio. But I think she will always have a little bit of a belly, its sometimes genetics :( But eating healthy and getting fiber in your diet should help regulate your digestive system and I believe that helps all of us in the tummy area :)

Its a swollen stomach. When you dont eat for a very very long time, the stomach actually starts eating the muscles in the stomach causing severe swelling. This is a fact. Poor little kids.

Could be worms accumulating in their intestines. Could be air trapped in their bellies. Just a guess, I don't know, sorry =(
