sounds stupid but... do mushrooms, onions or coleslaw count as a portion of veg? and also if you eat a big amount of one type of veg that you like could that be like eating two smaller portions of different veg?

Mushrooms and onions do, and although they are pretty good they are not not the best veg for nutrients unless they're eaten raw as they are often cooked in oil. A 'portion' is 3 tablespoonsful.
The raw ingredients of coleslaw are again very good for you but if they are smothered in copious amounts of mayonnaise then the fat content is high.
You should eat as wide a range of fruit and veg as you can for your 5 a day.

All those things are vegetables. A serving of vegetables is 1/2 cup. It would be very easy to eat 1/2 cup coleslaw, onions and mushrooms are usually used like a seasoning. You'd have to eat a full 1/2 cup to have it count as a vegetable serving. Most vegetables have the same vitamins, some just have more. If you were to eat a cup of broccoli and a cup of carrots in a day that would be 4 portions. Drink a glass of tomato juice and you've met the guidelines for good health. By the way, coleslaw is one of the best sources because it is raw and nothing has been lost to cooking. Hope this helps.

It depends on how much of each you have and how it is cooked. A large portion of mushrooms or onions will count as one the five. A whole pot of coleslaw will also be one. I think you have to have at least 3 different kinds to count as 5 portions.

Hmmm.. mushrooms count as fruit and veg. I'm not entirely sure about onion. I don't think coleslaw counts, because it's mostly composed of mayonnaise. Each type of fruit or veg only counts once. So eating 5 apples, is still only one of your five a day.

yes they all do count as your 5 aday as well as beans etc. eating any size portion will only count to 1 portion no matter how big it is. you need to eat 5 different fruits or veg.

I am almost certain that the above do not count as one of your 5 portions but if you eat large portions of those that do count then you can count them as more than one portion.

yes any veg no matter if its in sauce or just plain counts, and yes if you eat a lge amount it can count as 2 or maybe even 3 portions

id say so and coleslaw may count as three as its got carrot onion and cabbage in it but fresh is much nicer than shop bought
