I couldn't keep him out of it. I tried feeding in different rooms, at different times, at the same time, everything I could think of. The kitten ended up not working out too well, but by that time my cat had gotten up to 14 pounds! He has maintained that weight for about a year now. I have tried diet food and he won't eat it. He is very picky. He only likes Meow Mix, Kit and Kaboodle and cheap Dollar General and Family Dollar cat foods. They don't have those in diet. He won't even eat cat treats or canned food. Any Ideas?

I don't care that my cat is chunky. I worry about his health. We have had him since he was seven weeks old and he is now 5yrs old. He is a part of our family and we all love him. We want him around as long as possible.

Just cut back on his portions. Most pet food has recommended portion sizes somewhere on the package. He can still eat his favorite kind, just less of it.

Did you try REALLY slowly introducing the new diet food? Over a week's time (or even longer since your cat seems really picky), start with mostly old food with a TINY little bit of new food, then gradually start taking away more old food and replacing it with the new food.
If he doesn't like treats or canned food, try putting a little bit of tuna mixed in with the new diet food. I don't know a cat that doesn't like some tuna!
Also, if you want him around as long as possible, I would definitely recommend getting a higher quality cat food. Meow Mix is like feeding cereal to a cat every day. First 3 ingredients:
Meow Mix: Ground Yellow Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal
Eukanuba: Chicken, Chicken Liver, Chicken By-Product Meal,
Eukanuba's in the middle...there are much better ones out there than that, but we feed our cat Eukanuba. First ingredient is chicken!

Hello,
Tom cats do get pretty big and will bulk out quite a bit after neutering.
Try cutting down the amount of food you give him using the information of the back of his food packaging as a guide to how much is suitable per day/portion.
Excercise is an important factor in your cat's weight. Since you've had him neutered he has probably started to use less energy as he isn't out defending his terretory quite so much. Try to make time to play with him each day. We have indoor cats and try to let them have at least 30 leaps a day. This should help burn off the excess pounds.
All the best.x

Ive had my cat for about a year now and she was very picky at first when it came to eating her wet food. So I asked my mom about it (who happens to be an expert at all things cats) and I found out I was feeding her too much dry food. Eventhough it may not seem like a lot all your cat needs it 2 tablespoons of dry food a day. They need it to clean their teeth. But the wet food is where they get their dietary needs met.
So you may want to try what I did. I have one of those plastic bowls that has two areas to put food or water in...and I feed her half a can of wet food in the morning and 2 tablespoons of dry food in the other spot. By the time dinner time comes your cat will eat the wet food if there is no dry food to have snacked on all day to fill him up. (Thats where they gain the majority of their weight from anyway) Then I feed the other half of the can of wet food at night and some nights put down one more tablespoon of dry food.
It helps to really put an actual tablespoon in the dry food bag so you dont overestimate. Not sure if this will work for you or not but you are more than welcome to try. And trust me...if he doesnt have any other food to snack on...when he gets hungry he'll eat whatever you give him.
If you still have the kitten...feed it in the bathroom or other room with the door closed and as soon as you go in to let him out...pick up the extra food so your cat doesnt munch on it.
Good luck!!

Buy "lite" cat food. Start by mixing it with what he does like and increase the ratio of new food to old until he is getting only the diet cat food.
Also, give him more exercise. Get a Cat Dancer and some cat teasers to get him to run around and pounce and leap more so he can burn off that feline lard.

speaking from experience. Find out who in the family is giving him treats on the side and threaten them with there lives.
Now that the family is intimidated Lol, even the pickiest eater will take what is offered when there really hungry. Give your cat the food you know it needs and nothing else. He may try to ignore it for a while because he knows you will break down and give him what he wants but hold strong and when he gets hungry enough he will eat what he's given.
I know this sounds cruel but having lived with cats all my life I know that they are selfish creatures who train there owners as much as there owners try to train them.
Again don't give in.
Hope this helps

lol, exact same experience here, male cat 2 years old (16 pounds), got a little chunky after his operation, then i got a kitten, i couldnt put out adult food where the kitten could get it, and my big male cat prefered the kitten food, a year later both cats are healthy and happy, so no worries about ur cat eating the kitten food, it only lasts until ur kitten can eat adult food anyways. :)

If the surgery was done properly, it's impossible for your cat to be pregnant. But let's say there was a miracle - cat's are pregnant for around 2 months, so her belly would not start getting bigger for a few weeks, not days. Take her to a vet and have them evaluate her, maybe take an xray.
