Law gives us a sense of rules and order.

For instance, what happens when a parent gives no standards or rules to a child. The child is likely not to learn how to get along or to function in non-acceptable ways.

The purpose of law is suppose to be 1 due to the fact that humans cant seem to simply put use there common sense it is suppose to be there to tell us what is right and what is wrong and with that you are given the basics as a child through parents , school , society as to what is right and what is wrong ... then you are also taught that with each choice you make there are consequences and/or rewards ... thus if you were to choose wrong you would have a consequence to face .... so the law is suppose to enforce this fact you no for example that you do not have any money you walk into a store and you see a shirt you really like or mabey need you leave with it .... well if you did not pay for it that would be stealing therefore in the end you will have a consequence to pay for that choice you just made ... the law is suppose to be there so that you are guarenteed a price to pay for this bad choice ... the end result is suppose to be to keep an order in this world so that is humans have boundries and limits to our general mistakes , stupidness however you choose to label our bad descsions ....
The fact is however society has become known for simply put using LAW to simply make a quick buck ... you commit a crime and gennerally you have 2 outcomes ... you pay the court you walk away .... or they need publicity and the use you as an example in efforts to some how make themselves look good mabey due to bad publicity or an upcoming vote of some kind .... so in the end our laws that were suppose to be to teach us right from wrong and keep us in the right in general safe ... have now become corrupt and simply put a fast way to make a buck and a name for some town , city , whatever ....

The purpose of Law in society is to ensure that those values of the society are available to society as a whole. Our society values life(well at least for people already born), therefore murder is a crime. This is the simplest example I can come up with.

To maintain order, and stop criminal pigs from ruling
the roost, Law and order are maintained by the laws
brought in and implemented by a government, the
law enforcement agencies are there to arrest you
if you break the law..............................................................

The courts are there to see that Justice is done, the
Prisons are there to store those elements in society
who commit crimes and break those laws..........................

For those of you who hate it, get a reality check. If suddenly nothing was illegal, you'd all be pissing in your pants! and if you don't own a gun when all hell breaks loose, then too bad for you!
